THE TEAM
These are the folks that make up Studio Downe Under
SOREN
A lifelong passion for music – particularly the technique and craft involved with the recording of it – fueled Soren Lonnqvist’s dream of owning and operating his own studio. By 1985 Soren had jumped in with both feet and built Crosstown Studios in North Vancouver. After ten years of carving out a career as a studio owner, recording engineer, mixer, and producer (which generated some notable projects including Randy Bachman, Doug Bennett of Doug and the Slugs, and CBC TV) Soren sold Crosstown Studios to relocate to Abbotsford.
In Abbotsford, Soren purchased a property with significant commercial studio potential, kickstarted his labour of love, and never looked back. Tape began rolling at Studio Downe Under in 2005, and the facility underwent many impressive transformations over the years. In 2010, Soren undertook a major studio renovation to accommodate the recording of bands ‘live off the floor’. A second major overhaul took place in 2018, and today the studio boasts the ability to record nine musicians at once, with state-of-the-art equipment, both analog and digital gear, four isolation rooms, impeccable sightlines and all of the ambiance and comfort that clients expect in world-class studios.
Soren spent two terms as a board member of the BC Country Music Association (BCCMA) and is a respected stakeholder in the west coast music industry. Studio Downe Under has turned out projects for a range of Canadian recording artists including Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon and Chilliwack, in addition to picking up multiple BCCMA awards for ‘Studio of the Year’ (as recently as 2024), while Soren himself has twice been recognized as the BCCMA’s ‘Recording Professional of the Year’. Studio Downe Under has also been the host studio for a prestigious BC-based recording project called Demo Xperts, which to date has produced fifty high-quality demos for songwriters across western Canada.
Known as a generous studio host, skilled engineer and nuanced mixer, Soren continues to build a roster of loyal clients and build on the profile of Studio Downe Under as one of BC’s premier recording facilities.
